It is annoyingly obvious what Kanye West’s negative contributions to society and pop culture are but this man wants to run for president. If one has been intellectually serious towards music and musicians then I applaud you but allow me to enlighten you here. West stormed out of the American Music Awards in 2004 when he was not voted artist of the year (like a jealous little child), stating that George Bush didn’t “care about black people” (i beg to differ sir for Bush’s stupidity no doubt aided Barack Obama), appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone in a crown of thorns (proving that he can at least try to be as big a fraud as the supposed “real” Jesus), staging a sales competition with 50 cent (now worth even less than that), interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMA’s and saying that Beyonce had earned the award not swift (Beyonce’s reaction proving the lack of class West has) and,finally West’s idiotic and unfounded claims that he is a genius with god like attributes. As he’s a christian i’m sure he’s read the old testament (although i doubt he could read a book of any considerable length) and therefore he’s welcome to these attributes.
Nonetheless West will always claim that:
He’s misunderstood- He’s“mentally” 10 yrs ahead of everyone else
- He has so much god-given talent that he just might be a deity himself
- Nobody else is like him; he’s an individual (thankfully!)
- He’s a meta post-modern cross-cultural pop-star genius (with the memory of a gold fish if bohemian rhapsody is concerned)
- He’s dope
- He’s an artistic genius and if you don’t understand or appreciate what he creates and says you must be ignorant or un-evolved
- He’s often “offended”
- He’s a genius
He also says that he’s got an ability to inspire young people. Indeed i am young and he has certainly inspired this piece. Everytime he opens his mouth he creates noises coined from random words and popular phrases he’s spooned together to sound remotely intelligent. Indeed artistic licence should not save him here. Any of us who,are loyal to the english language and not its barbaric rape, point out that he is not able to apply meaning to any of the words he uses are labelled as critics and ignorant. The dictionary is very stubborn.
West’s father was an alleged black panther who then became a photojournalist before committing the dangerous act of being a christian counsellor who followed his religious advice so fervently that he divorced his wife (West’s mother), a professor of English, when he was three years old.This of course is not something to be celebrated but should highlight the liquid stock that religion is made of. Kanye spent some time in China as a child while his mother was a teacher before then attending the Chicago American Academy of Art on scholarship before transferring to Chicago State to study English (yes I said English), and then finally dropped out of school at age 20 to pursue music. West aimed for recognition as a rapper but he was artsy and middle class, and did not conform to a “gangsta image” that was marketable.
West’s tactic to gaining fame and notoriety seems to be to simultaneously bash and worship celebrity in order to be controversial (because his music isn’t enough to catch the attention of the public eye). It would be fair to think Mr West has a lot psychological problems that are not appropriate for the presidency.
West partakes in dialectic thinking. This is holding two opposing points of view in which one can consider them both to be true. He does this by simultaneously rejecting and worshiping fame. He is a materialist, striving to be relatable by butchering songs at the biggest festival in the world (Glastonbury), but also claiming to be the Steve Jobs and Michael Jordan of music, whilst being equal to the messiah.
He has the attention seeking tendency of a middle child. Attention seeking is when a person engages in behaviors for the sole purpose of gaining the attention of others. No doubt this is essential for his marketing tactic. Of course this depends of the product that he wants to sell. Nonetheless i’m not buying. Society reinforces this idea of bad attention being better than no attention, and sometimes better than “good attention” by keeping the misbehaving and offensive celebrities in the headlines. I’m determined to make bad press to no longer be good publicity.
He can also be accused of narcissistic personality disorder. This is the excessive attention seeking behaviors. This disorder describes people who are overly conscious of their position both in power, posture and physicality. People with this disorder tend to feel self-important and have a strong need for admiration and fanatical following because the lack empathy and exaggerate everything they tend to construct. This disorder is often said to have been caused by people defending themselves against a deep inferiority complex and a fear of being unloved (keep going along the same track Mr West and you will see this to become reality, if it isn’t already). He does a nice job of illustrating all of this.
West seems to have adopted an adolescent attitude of making sure that people that people don’t put him in the box, instead of aiming to make the box. Identity formation is the process through which a person comes to understand the characteristics in themselves that both set them apart as having a distinct personality but also help them affiliate with others and West can be diagnosed with this. This is something that most people get rid of in their adolescence. West’s failure to individualise himself (perhaps) can lead to (as is seen in most adolescents) difficulties in forming relationships with others because of his inability to form shared identities. If he’s unsuccessful with this (as I believe is) then this individual will struggle to find themselves into adulthood.
This is not a psychiatric concept but West’s declaration of infallibility is equally as ridiculous as the elderly virgin’s declaration of a similar god complex. Both men believe that their opinions (cloaked by the christian crackpots) are correct and could not possibly be otherwise. The song “I am God” should be self explanatory. The lyrics express a humanistic approach to ethics, one that exists without the need for god and the ridiculous religion that West and the elderly virgin prescribe to.
Things that seem to come hand in hand include a deity and a prophecy. West does not buck this trend. He can be found guilty of having a self-fulfilling prophecy, like religion. A self-fulfilling prophecy is a person’s belief or prediction of a certain outcome that becomes true by the very terms of the prophecy itself. Therefore his strongly held belief (and delusion) is declared true (rather than argued to be so) by the pathetic and wet acts of those people who cheered his announcement to run for president.
So I ask, are these the characteristics you want for your future president? If Kanye West is the answer to this then you are asking the wrong question.
